What Makes a Movie?

Movies are moving images recorded by cameras to tell a story or recall an event. They entertain and sway the audience, introduce people to new cultures and viewpoints, and let people escape into another fantastical reality for a short time. But what qualifies as a good movie? A recent debate erupted when one of the most influential filmmakers in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese, claimed that he doesn’t consider Marvel movies actual cinema. He compares them to theme parks with actors that are doing the best they can. This is a fascinating debate that shows how subjective movie critics can be, and it raises the question of what makes a great movie.

Movies come in many different genres. Dramas are stories about relationships between people. They usually follow a basic plot where one or two main characters have to overcome an obstacle to get what they want. Family movies are made for children to watch. Fantasy movies are about magical or impossible things that no human can do. Movies that are based on historical events or people are called period films. Detective stories about a murder or an investigation are called film noir.

When making a movie, the director, writers, and actors work together to create characters that are believable. They then record these characters with a camera and add music and sound effects. Once the movie is finished, it is sent to a lab where it is transferred onto film reels. People can then go to a theater and see it on a big screen. Movies can also be seen on TV or videocassette tapes in people’s homes.

Some movies are based on novels or other sources. Others are created from ideas or dreams of the writer or directors. Some movies have a lot of special effects and computer graphics. Other movies are based on true events. Movies can be about history, adventure, romance, or tragedy.

Often the most important thing about a movie is how well it is acted. Good acting allows the audience to connect with characters and understand what they are feeling. A bad actor can make a movie very boring. The actor in Artemis Fowl, for example, had the most monotonous voice I have ever heard. The audience was not able to identify emotions in his character and the movie had very few positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

A movie can be considered art if it is beautiful and if the actors portray their roles convincingly. It can also be considered a piece of art if it is controversial or if it has a unique style. Movies can also be considered art if they are based on literary masterpieces or if they use a particular technique that is unusual or unique. For example, Andrei Tarkovsky’s movies have a unique style that uses long sequences of back and forth pictures of an actor’s profile and their faces. This helps to build tension in the movie and draws the audience into the scene.
