How to Analyze a Movie

A movie is a film that tells a story. People watch movies in theaters, at home on TV or computers, and on tablets. When a movie is well written and directed, it can be entertaining and make you think about important issues. A movie can be fictional, or it can be based on real events. It can be about a family, or it can be about a war. Movies are different from books, because they tell a story in a very visual way. There are many different genres of movies:

An analysis of a movie includes looking at the plot (what the movie is about), characters, and setting. It also looks at the way the film was filmed and how it contributes to the mood of the movie. It’s important to pay attention to the dialogue and characterization as well. Did the actors seem to speak in a natural manner, or did they talk overly exaggerated?

The movie’s plot should be clear and easy to understand. There should be a good amount of suspense and a climax that will leave the viewer satisfied. This is especially important if the movie is a thriller or mystery. Thrillers and mysteries are about something unusual or a crime that needs to be solved. These movies usually have ‘twists’ in the plot (surprises). Dramas are about relationships between people. They can be happy or sad, and they often have a central character who faces a difficult decision. Movies that cause the audience to feel emotions, such as anger or sadness, are called tragedies. ‘Emotional movies’ are often more successful than movies that do not, because they are more likely to stick in the mind of the viewer.

A movie’s setting can add to its tone and help to create a sense of place. For example, a movie set in the city could show how social class affects a person’s life. A rich family could live high up in the city, while a poorer family might live in the sewers below. This could show that a person is born into a certain status, and it is difficult to climb up out of it.

The music and songs in a movie are often a big part of the story. A movie’s soundtrack can make or break it, especially if it is catchy or dramatic. This is also an opportunity to evaluate the direction of the movie, and to consider whether the director made the best choices for the plot. It is also important to look at the cast, including the main characters and any important supporting actors. Finally, it is important to discuss the cinematography. This includes things like how the camera was filmed and what effects were used. The director uses these techniques to make the movie look more interesting and to make a particular mood. For example, a slow, moody movie may use a lot of close-up shots to create an unnerving feeling.
