A movie is a story that is told on film (pictures). It usually has music and sound. Movies can be fictional or non-fictional and are often broadcast in Cinemas or on television. They can also be made into a DVD disk or videocassette tape and sold to people to watch at home.
The first movie was called Roundhay Garden Scene and was made in 1909. It is only 2.11 seconds long, but it is one of the earliest movies ever made.
Many different movies are made every year. Some are about fiction and some are about real life events. Some are dramas and some are thrillers.
When a movie is made, it is filmed by using cameras and people in costumes and special effects (special makeup) to make the pictures look real. When the filming is finished, an editor makes the pictures play after each other to tell a story. Audio engineers and sound engineers record music or singing and add it to the film. Then many copies of the film are made by film labs and put on film reels. When the film reels are sent to cinemas, a projector shines a very bright light through the film so that people can see it on a big screen in the cinema.
Some movies are very famous. These are called blockbusters. These are the most popular and often have lots of special effects. They can also have huge budgets and lots of stars in them. They can also be very violent or have a lot of action in them.
Other movies are more unusual and are not so well known. They are sometimes called Indie or Art movies. They may be very unusual and may only be made by small movie companies or just a few people. They may be very expensive to make but they usually have a lot of money in ticket and DVD sales.
These movies are very interesting and often make you think about things that you haven’t thought about before. They are often very emotional and can make you cry or get upset.
The best movies are often about the past or the future, but some are about something else altogether. They can be about alien worlds or space, or they can be about people in another country.
Some films have very sad or scary parts. These can make the audience cry or get very upset, and they can be a very funny part too.
During the making of the film, the director and actors read the script to learn what they have to say in the film. Then a cameraman takes film of them saying the words. Then an editor makes the films into a movie.
When the filming is done, the editor puts the films together to tell a story within a certain amount of time. Then the director, actor and other people who have helped make the film can see it. They can then comment on the film and make it better.
